Diagnostic Services

Diagnostic Radiology
The Rush North Shore Medical Center Department of Radiology provides a full service of cancer diagnostic imaging and interventional programs. In the Breast Imaging Center, state-of-the-art dedicated equipment is available for both screening and diagnostic mammography, as well as dedicated breast ultrasound equipment and stereotactic biopsy unit. Biopsies of breast lesions are done by a radiologist with ultrasound and/or stereotactic guidance. Performed in the general diagnostic area are interventional procedures necessary for the management of chest, abdominal and pelvic abnormalities. The radiology department also contains separate sections for nuclear medicine and general ultrasound procedures.

High Technology Imaging
The CT/MRI Centre at Rush North Shore provides a full range of capabilities for both diagnostic and interventional procedures utilizing Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance (MRI), which are frequently needed for both diagnostic tumor imaging and subsequent evaluation in the treatment and follow-up phase.

The Center operates two new helical CT 16-row scanners that allow for three-dimensional formatting of organ, vascular and bone structures and both a high-field "closed" magnetic resonance imaging unit and a high-field "open" MRI unit.

Positive Emission Tomography (PET) is available at Rush North Shore Medical Center. This revolutionary two-in-one medical imaging system helps your doctor quickly determine whether you have cancer, if it's spreading, whether your treatment is working or if there is a recurrence. This new system combines the functional information (PET) with the anatomical information from the (CT).

Comprehensive Breast Center
The Rush North Shore Medical Center Comprehensive Breast Program provides a multidisciplinary approach to breast disease. Our community-oriented program focuses on the following components of breast care:
  • Breast Health (screening for healthy women of average risk)
  • High-Risk Patients (surveillance and genetic counseling)
  • Diagnostic, Treatment and Second Opinion Services
  • Education and Research
A nurse coordinator is available to assist in all aspects of care as well as to answer questions. High-risk patients can be enrolled in our intensive screening program, genetic counseling and testing program. Breast diagnostic services available include mammography, ultrasonography and MRI as well as image-guided biopsies.

The program has a multidisciplinary approach to breast cancer treatment in which cases are reviewed by an expert panel of surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, radiologists and reconstructive surgeons. Numerous research protocols are available to our patients including participation in studies on sentinel lymph node biopsy and adjuvant treatment. In addition, ancillary psychological support services can be accessed through our program.
