Open Heart, Vascular and Thoracic Surgery

Just ten years old, the cardiovascular surgery program at Rush North Shore already has been placed in the nation's top 50 by US News & World Report. Our cardiovascular surgeons are board-certified and among the best in the country. Cardiac surgery at Rush North Shore has truly evolved to be a full-service program in that we routinely treat complex diseases of the aorta, namely aneurysms and dissections. We also treat the entire vascular system, and are involved in surgery of the carotid and lower extremity vessels.

Cardiovascular surgery services include:
  • Traditional coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) The surgical procedure treats narrowing or "stenosis" of the coronary arteries and is called coronary artery bypass or CABG (pronounced "cabbage"). To accomplish this, cardiothoracic surgeons create bypasses around the obstructions in the coronary arteries with arteries or veins from elsewhere in the body to improve blood flow to the heart. Minimally invasive coronary artery bypass surgery
  • Coronary artery bypass surgery with valve replacement
  • Valve replacement
  • Aortic aneurysm repair and repair of aortic dissections
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm repair
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm with endovascular stent repair
  • Peripheral vascular stent repair
  • Peripheral/lower extremity arterial revascularization
  • Repair of varicose veins
  • Carotid endarterectomy (a fatty buildup of plaque is removed from the carotid artery)
  • Arterio-venous fistula for hemodialysis
  • Placement of inferior vena cava shunt
  • Permanent pacemaker/automatic implantable cardiac defibrillator and biventricular pacemakers
  • Radial artery harvest
  • Thoracoscopy
  • Mediastinoscopy (Mediastinoscopy is used to stage lung cancer, especially when enlarged nodes are seen on chest x-ray or CT scan)
Thoracic surgery is offered for patients with:
  • Lung cancer and pulmonary disease
  • Medistatinal tumor
  • Esophageal disease
Cardiac Surgery Team
Our heart surgery team, led by cardiac surgeon Jonathan Somers, MD, is a tight dedicated crew that is available at a moment's notice 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Virtually the same staff who formed the heart program, over 11 years ago, they are still here today. What distinguishes this open heart program from the rest, lies in the heart team itself. Many of the nurse, techs, perfusionists and assistants were also there the day of the first surgery. "The heart surgery team is one-of-a-kind," says Jeanne Mentzer, program coordinator.
