VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITITES

Do you enjoy the satisfaction of helping others and, at the same time, giving back to your community? If so, you may want to consider becoming a volunteer at Rush North Shore Medical Center. You will be working with staff and physicians who are committed to providing the quality healthcare to our community.

We are looking for friendly, compassionate people who want to make a meaningful contribution to our community and have fun at the same time. Volunteer positions are available during the day, in the evening and on weekends. Our volunteers work 4 hour shifts during the day and 3 hour shifts in the evening.

Placement is determined by your qualifications and interests and the Medical Center's needs.


Clerical Assistant
Clerical Volunteers perform various office duties including copying, collating, filing, answering phones and stuffing envelopes.

Emergency Department Patient/Family Liaison
Emergency Department Liaisons greet patients and visitors entering the Medical Center, act as liaison between Emergency Department staff and patients and/or families in the waiting area and provide directions within the Medical Center.

Patient Care Services Assistant
Patient Care volunteers work with the medical staff to ensure that the needs of our patients are met. Specifically, Patient Care Assistants transport patients throughout the Medical Center, answer phones, respond to patient call lights, restock supplies, perform clerical duties and act as messengers for the medical staff.

Patient Care Service Assistants are assigned to the Nursing floors, Endoscopy Center, Ambulatory Surgery, Emergency Department (must be at least 18 years of age), and the Post Anesthesia Care Unit.

Menu Assistant
Menu Volunteers pass out and pick up menus and assist patients in completing their choices.

Patient Visitor
Patient Visitors provide personal friendly attention to patients, run in-house errands for patients, inform patients of Medical Center services following procedures, alert nurses of patient needs and alert Pastoral Care department of any patient requesting or needing spiritual counseling.

Rehabilitation Services
Rehab Volunteers transport patients to and from Physical Therapy via wheelchair, restock supplies and equipment, answer phones and provide clerical assistance.

Russian Translators
Bi-lingual translators help Russian-speaking patients communicate with their doctors or nurses, help the hospital's Russian-speaking visitors to find their family member's hospital room, or transport a patient by wheelchair.

Transport/Messenger
Transport/Messengers move patients throughout the Medical Center via wheelchair, deliver patient records to staff, pick/up drop off medications at the hospital pharmacy, take specimens to the laboratory and deliver flowers.

Placement may not be available in these departments at all times.
