Urogynecology
When urine leaking becomes frequent or severe enough to become a problem, it is called urinary incontinence. Urinary incontinence means the bladder is unable to hold urine for as long as needed until it can be released voluntarily.

Our urogynecology services at the Centre for Women’s Health include the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of urinary incontinence and pelvic floor problems in women. Our board certified urogynecology subspecialists employ a variety of methods to diagnose and treat bladder control issues.

Bladder control problems can have a profound effect on a woman’s lifestyle; she may limit her exercise, travel, and social activities. If you are a woman faced with the inability to hold your urine until you reach a restroom, you are not alone. It is estimated that 10-25% of women under the age of 65 and 15-35% of women older than 60 are affected by this problem. Incontinence is treatable and often curable at any age.

Urodynamic Testing
Urodynamic testing is a series of short tests that evaluate the function of the bladder and urethra. Testing is performed with specialized computer equipment in order to duplicate day-to-day symptoms. Urodynamic testing can take anywhere from one to 2 hours. A female Nurse Practitioner performs the testing. Once your results have been reviewed by the urogynecologist, you will be notified and a follow-up appointment will be scheduled if necessary to discuss a treatment plan.

Cardiac Screening
In conjunction with Rush North Shore’s Cardiac Care Center, we offer a full range of heart screenings. Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the U.S. The symptoms of heart problems may be different in women than in men. It is crucial that women are screened for gender specific risk factors of this silent killer.

Bone Density Scanning
A woman’s risk of developing osteoporosis increases as she ages. We offer bi-weekly heel density screenings, which scan the heel to quickly and painlessly determine your risk of fracture. This assessment can indicate if a full body DEXA scan is necessary.

The full body DEXA scan is the newest technology for measuring bone density and assessing bone health. Unlike an ordinary X-ray, bone densitometry detects mild bone loss that may lead to osteopenia or osteoporosis, diseases in which the bone’s mineral content and density are low. This increases your risk of fracture as you age. It is also used to measure the amount of calcium in specific regions of the bones. This advanced form of technology uses one-tenth of the radiation of a standard chest x-ray and is non-invasive.

We also provide you with information on how diet and exercise can play a role in decreasing the effects of osteoporosis and osteopenia.

Ultrasound
The 3-dimensional pelvic ultrasound is a fast and very precise diagnostic test for detecting gynecologic problems such as fibroids, ovarian cysts, and abnormal bleeding. The equipment uses high frequency sound waves that are bounced off body tissues that indicate information about the anatomy of an internal organ.
